Virtual Events: 3 Tips You Need to Succeed

March 24, 2020

Are we going to have to cancel our event? It’s the big question on everyone’s mind right now. Especially for nonprofit development and marketing teams.

Nonprofit organizations rely on their annual events to generate the necessary funds to stay devoted to their cause. But, what do you do when staying at home is the best policy for public health and safety?

Host a virtual event!

Virtual events are a growing trend that can be just as successful as in-real-life events, as long as you recreate the most important aspects of IRL events.

  1. Entertainment

You still need entertainment. This is one of the main reasons people attend events (other than caring about your cause, of course). Just because your attendees are tuning in from their couch doesn’t mean they don’t want to have a good time.

So, bring your A-game. Book a guest speaker, a comedy line-up, a band, or a pre-recorded themed video. You’re only limited by your creativity.

2. A Sense of Community:

A virtual event does not diminish the importance of a felt, collective experience. It’s important to give your attendees the opportunity to network and connect with each other, if only from their couches.

We are social creatures, and we need connection, even in a quarantine. Create a designated slack channel for your virtual event. Or ask your attendees to dress up and send the photos to a designated social media channel so people see them. Now is the time to get creative while staying safe.

3. A Chance to Do Good:

People want to help. When faced with a common enemy, we tend to band together and look for productive ways to join the fight. Since staying at home is the most helpful thing many can do right now, people feel stuck and restless.

It’s part of being human. They want to work and feel useful. We want to contribute. And, a virtual event provides an opportunity for people to give back and support causes they care about.
